The Defenders

The Defenders on Netflix is Marvel’s highly anticipated collaboration between superheroes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and the Iron Fist. The show picks up where each individual series left off. Matt Murdock AKA Daredevil, is mourning Elektra’s death and has given up on his crime fighting duties. He and his partner Foggy have closed their law practice and gone their separate ways. However, he quickly finds himself pulled back into New York’s crime.

Jessica Jones is trying to move past all the publicity from taking down Killgrave. She shuns the whole superhero thing and is trying to move on and get her private investigation practice going again. She gets a visitor from a wife who wants her to find her missing husband.

Luke Cage gets released from prison and immediately meets up with his love interest, Claire. He’s not back at home relaxing for a minute before he’s visited by Misty who tells him how helpful he can, and should be, now that he’s back in Harlem.

The Iron Fist, AKA Danny Rand, is working as a vigilante with his girlfriend (and former Hand member) Colleen. They are still in pursuit of the Hand and doing everything that they can to bring down the murderous group.

Early on we learn that Elektra is back from the dead and she’s fighting for the Hand. As the show progresses, we are introduced to a new villain, Alexandria Reed (played by Sigourney Weaver). Alexandra is not just a member of the Hand but she is also their leader. Apparently, the Hand took Elektra’s dead body and brought it back to Alexandria. Alexandria used the Hand’s special formula to bring Elektra back to life. She is renamed, the Black Sky, and groomed to fight any and every one on behalf of the Hand.

The biggest issue however is that Alexandria has used the last of the special formula on Elektra which means that the leaders of the Hand who have been immortal are no longer protected until they replenish the formula. Apparently, there is a ton of the special formula at the entrance to K’un-Lun so the Hand will need the Iron Fist to gain entry and re-up.

All four characters manage to cross paths and come together (despite some initial resistance) and work together to defeat the Hand and stop them from getting more of the secret formula. As the series ends, they all find themselves trapped under a building that has detonators counting down to explode and blow up the whole building.

Unfortunately, the first season only has a total of 8 episodes however the good news is that there is sure to be a second season on the horizon.

You can catch the Defenders on Netflix.
