Review - Autodesk SketchBook Motion App

Adding animation to your digital art is easy using Autodesk SketchBook Pro Flipbook and SketchBook Motion for the iPad. The Flipbook feature in SketchBook Pro is an easy way to create timeline based animation. But with the SketchBook Motion app you can add motion to your art using simple tools. SketchBook Motion is now part of the SketchBook family and included in a yearly subscription. Let's take a look.

SketchBook Motion App

SketchBook Motion is an iPad app and can run on iOS version 9 and above. You can draw the art in SketchBook Motion or import the elements created in other apps. You work with scenes, which contain one or more animations.

The SketchBook Motion Gallery has an Examples tab which displays several finished examples. Check out some of them to get ideas and study the layer structure and animation controls. It's the best way to learn how to create your own animations.

When you are ready to create your own animations, switch to the My Scenes tab. This tab is where you will start a new scene, reopen, rename and delete your scenes.

The Tools

  1. Move along a path - Just draw a path on the screen and select the objects that you wish to move along that path.

  2. Move along a radial axis - Make your art turn circles with this tool.

  3. Particles - I was surprised to see a particle tool. There is a Wind option for horizontal moving particles and the Rain option for downward particle motion. I remember how difficult it was to create particles just a few years ago but now you can even control the boundary of the particles and add masks to the area. This makes it very easy to add realism to your particle animation.

  4. Grow tool - This tool will allow you to bend, shrink and grow the object.

  5. Layers - You will apply animations to layers. You can create complex animations using multiple layers.

  6. Advanced Controls - Use these controls to customize the scale, speed and opacity of your animated art. With the Granular controls, you can customize the rotation, path and speed of particles or individual particles.

  7. Sharing - You can share your animation as an animated gif, mp4 video file and email a link to your stored animation. When emailing a link, you will store your animation for up to 30 days on the SketchBook Motion server.
