It's even possible to make your own laundry powder! This natural option uses simple ingredients: castile soap, baking soda, washing soda, and essential oils. Here's a look at why we chose these ingredients:
Castile Soap. This is a natural soap that has three ingredients oil, usually olive oil, lye, and distilled water. In order to make this recipe, you'll choose natural, unscented olive oil castile soap in bar form.
Baking Soda. This ingredient softens the water, brightens colors, and seems to make the soap more effective.
Washing Soda. This is another ingredient that helps soften the water, removes excess, built up soap, intensifies the color, and cleans it extra.
Natural Laundry Powder Recipe
Ingredients:
1 bar of natural, unscented castile soap or one cup of powdered castile soap
1 cup baking soda
1 cup washing soda (Borax)
10 drops essential oil of choice, such as lavender, grapefruit, lemon
Instructions:
Grate the natural bar of castile soap using a fine grater. If you can find powdered pastile soap you won't need to grate it.
Place the grated soap in a mixing bowl. Add the baking soda and the washing soda and mix it together well. Stir in the essential oil.
Transfer the powder to an airtight container. Use about 1/4-1/3 a cup of the mixture for every load of laundry. Be sure to shake the container well before scooping it out to give the ingredients a chance to settle.
Note:
Although it may look like baking soda and washing soda do the exact same thing, it is preferable to use both. However, if you have on but not the other on hand, feel free to substitute and use either 2 cups of baking soda or 2 cups of washing soda.
