It is difficult to miss the Kawaii trend. You will find it on anything from children's toys to mugs, lamps, chairs and much more. All these products have one thing in common - they are cute and adorable.
In fact, cute and adorable is what Kawaii means in Japanese pop culture. This culture of cuteness became popular in 1960 - 1980.
While doing research for a project featuring cat illustrations, I really started to gain interest in the Kawaii design trend. So I went to Skillshare.com and started watching their Kawaii video courses. There are quite a few courses on this subject, but the courses that I liked the best were by Ecky O. Right now he has twelve courses on Skillshare.

What I liked the best about Ecky's illustration technique is that it is so simple. If you are a beginner, this is a great course. Ecky starts with just two simple ovals. Each of the eight cat illustrations has a different posture or pose. By placing these two ovals in various positions, he can determine the posture of the cat and where to add the ears, eyes, legs and tail. After sketching each cat, Ecky introduces the color palette that he has chosen to use for painting the cat. He demonstrates how to color the cats in a variety of fur patterns.
One way I can tell if a course is worth watching is by looking at the student's uploaded projects. For this course, all of the students came up with a great combination of their own cats.
It was a nice surprise to see a talking animation of Ecky O introducing the course. He has included English subtitles but his accent is not really a problem. Also included is a downloadable PDF worksheet.
Ecky has been an illustrator since 2002 and has lectured on the subject of Visual Communication Design at Ciputra University since 2006. He has several other courses on Skillshare, which are listed on his profile page.
