Book Review: The Ten Golden Rules

The Ten Golden Rules: Ancient Wisdom From The Greek Philosophers On Living The Good Life is a great little book that translates ancient philosophy into useful rules of modern living. If you are looking for a book with good and practical philosophy knowledge that you can apply to your daily life without the complicated classical approach, this book is for you!

Written by M.A. Soupios, PhD and Panos Mourdoukoutas, PhD, this simple book is easy to read, yet provides profound lessons of the ancient wisdom. Each chapter starts with a short story that demonstrates the rule of the chapter. This practical approach makes it an even more pleasant read that most readers can relate and understand.

So what are the Ten Golden Rules?

Rule 1: Examine Life

Rule 2: Worry Only about the Things You Can Control

Rule 3: Treasure Friendship

Rule 4: Experience True Pleasure

Rule 5: Master Yourself

Rule 6: Avoid Excess

Rule 7: Be a Responsible Human Being

Rule 8: Don’t Be a Prosperous Fool

Rule 9: Don’t Do Evil to Other People

Rule 10: Kindness toward Others Tends to Be Rewarded

My favorite rule is Rule 2: Worry Only about the Things You Can Control. “Worry only about the things under your control, the things that can be influenced and changed by your actions, not about the things that are beyond your capacity to direct or alter.” This certainly is a great rule to keep life in balance and keep our serenity in check. Worrying about things that we don’t have control of is a major source of anxiety and unhappiness in life.

Another rule I love in the Ten Golden Rules is Rule 7: Be a Responsible Human Being. As the book suggests “Reproach yourself with honesty and thoroughness for wrongdoing; maintain a kind of spiritual hygiene; stop the blame-shifting for your errors and shortcomings. Be honest with yourself and be prepared to assume responsibility and to accept consequences.” ~ The Ten Golden Rules
