France | Greece | Spain | Turkey

Italy’s islands, Mediterranean west coast, Adriatic east coast, and Lake District in the north offer a wide variety of equally spectacular beaches.

Calabria
Visitors should not expect luxury resort hotels.

* Pizzo - boasts a grotto sanctuary, with carved life-sized praying figures

Campania
Dramatic seaside towns along the coast include the beaches of Capri and the Amalfi Coast.

* Amalfi - cheaper than Positano
* Ischia - located in the Gulf of Gaeta, this island boasts thermal spas
* Positano - spectacular beach and expensive!
* Sorrento - cheaper than Positano
* Capri - accessible by sea from towns such as Naples and Sorrento, this island boasts a beautiful lighthouse at Punta Carena and visitors can swim near the ruins of a Roman villa in Bagni di Tiberio.
- Grotto Azzurra (Blue Grotto) oftern has long lines of tourists
- Marina Piccola, accessible by boat or on foot, is close to the dramatic rocks of Faraglioni

Lombardia (Lombardy and The Lake District)
The Lake District boasts old-fashioned resorts and grand hotels.

* Lago di Como (Lake Como) - boasts famous resorts like Bellagio and the romantic Varenna
* Lago di Garda (Lake Garda) - located near Verona, the lake boasts many resorts on the western shore
* Lago di Maggiore) Lake Maggiore - Borromean Islands in the center of the lake

Liguria (Italian Riviera)
The western Riviera di Ponente (Riviera of the Setting Sun) from the French border to Genoa boasts resort towns and wide sandy beaches. The eastern Riviera di Levante (Riviera of the Rising Sun) from Genoa to Portovenere boasts small coves and rocky cliffs.

* Cinque Terre - includes the villages of Monterosso, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore and Vernazza
* Lerici - public beaches and the private Eco del Mare
* Levanto - cove located just north of Cinque Terre
* Portofino - beautiful yachting harbor
* Rapallo - rocky beaches offer boat trips to Cinque Terre and Portofino
* San Remo - beaches, a casino, a race track and a golf course
* Santa Margherita Ligure - on a beautiful road
* Sestri Levante - sandy beaches

Puglia (Apulia)
Beaches and rocky cliffs boast Greek-looking villages along the coasts.

* Isole Tremiti (Tremiti Islands) - located in the Adriatic, these small islands are accessible by boat from Vieste and Manfredonia. In the off-season access is from Termilo. San Domino, the largest island, boasts popular grottoes including the Grotta del Blu Marino (Blue Marine Grotto), Grotta di Sale (Salt Grotto) and Grotta delle Viole (Violet Grotto)
* Otranto - accessible by road or rail from Lecce

Sicilia (Sicily)
Palermo is accessible by sea from Naples and Genoa. Messina is accessible by sea from Villa San Giovanni

* Isole Egadi (Egadi Islands) - located off the west coast of Sicily, the islands are accessible by sea from Trapani. Arrange transportation to the smaller islands of Levanzo and Marettimo from Favignana
* Isole Lipari (Lipari Islands) - located off the east coast of Sicily, the islands are accessible by sea from Milazzo or Messina. Don't miss the Spiaggia Sabbie Nere (Black Sand Beach) on the island of Vulcano
* Isole Pelagie (Pelagian Islands) - located between Sicily and Tunisia, the islands are accessible by sea or by air from Palermo. The islands of Lampedusa, Lampione and Linosa boast total peacde and quiet… and sea turtles
