How Should A Christian Live?

Thomas Nelson has come out with a four part series geared toward the middle school crowd. This week, I reviewed book three in the Word of Promise: Next Generation series. How Should A Christian Live? is a devotional and journal that covers the New Testament books of 1Corinthians through Philemon. Scripture references are provided and, where necessary to make a point or provide fill-in information, references to the Old Testament are given. Included with the book is an MP3 disc that is narrated by some of today’s top teenage talent: AnnaSophia Robb, Marshall Allman, Sean Astin, Jordin Sparks, Corbin Bleu, Emily Osment and Cody Linley. The notation on the back of the book indicates it is “juvenile nonfiction”. My opinion is that the book is best suited for grades 6 through 9 with the option of being used for advanced 5th graders.

The book, beginning with the prayer of salvation, is broken down into twelve chapters called sessions. Beginning each session is a recommended MP3 selection to listen to. The sessions present information on how to live a life that is pleasing to God. Broken down into three parts--“Get It”, “Grab It”, and “Hold It”--the information presented is simple to understand and contains examples that help to explain biblical principles. Following each session are games and blank pages on which to journal. The final chapter of the book contains the answers to all of the chapters’ puzzles and diagrams.

While this book would be ideal for individual study, it would also make an ideal reference for small groups. If you are a parent looking for a trustworthy source to present to your tween or teen, the Word of Promise: Next Generation series should not be missed.
