Joe's Scarecrow Village - This is definitely one of the more sillier sites to visit on Cape Breton Island, you might not hear about it from a travel agents but if you have kids its a stop you should make!


Joe's Scarecrow Village has an ever growing population of scarecrows, each and every year new additions are made so there is always something new you can check out. The scarecrows themselves come in all shapes and sizes, ages and occupations. Yes these scarecrows have jobs, there's a plumber and a farmer, a teacher and even a police man to keep everyone in line, oh and of course there is a cute retired couple. You can visit the group of gossiping grandma's or join in a game of ring around the rosy with the village children. Joe's Scarecrow Village is also home to the worlds smallest scarecrow!


The scarecrows are so cute and your sure to have a laugh at some, it is also a great place to take some goofy pictures to show off to friends. But what's the cost of this silly attraction? Its absolutely free! Yep I said free. The village is run completely off of donations, so if you have some spare change throw it in the box and help build a new scarecrow for next year.


Also before you head out make sure to sign the guest book, and while your there have a peek through. Its really neat to see how many people have visited the village from all over the world. From Germany, China, Australia, and farther, pretty good for a group of scarecrows right.

Street Performers - Every summer Sydney host's "action week" and with this event comes plenty of fun and games. My favourite though has always been the street performers. each year performers from around the world gather on Sydney's boardwalk each with a special talent.


Over the years I have seen fire breathers, sword swallowers, jugglers, magicians, comedians, and even a guy who could fit through a tennis racket. The performers will have you both laughing and gasping throughout the day.
Of course if you need a break from the performers there is plenty more for you to do. Check out the street sales which always has some neat things for good prices, the silly clowns, musical entertainment, face painting for the kids, and of course there is plenty of places to eat so make sure you check them out. Personally I always liked to keep it simple and order some homemade fries from the big red bus (they are amazing).


The best thing about spending the day here is that all the performances are free to watch, but like all street performances a donation is requested at the end of the show if you enjoyed what you have seen. Some performers really deserve it and some not so much so it is up to you whether you throw some money in the hat and whether you tip them $1 or $10. All shows are family friendly and great no matter your age. So if you are in Cape Breton during action week (usually the first week in August) make sure you swing by the Sydney boardwalk and see all the sites for yourself.
