Although studies show that foods high in beta-carotene may protect against lung cancer, some studies have found that smokers who took beta-carotene as supplements were actually more likely to get lung cancer. However, beta-carotene from natural sources like spinach, broccoli, and apricots should reap nothing but good health for you. Before taking a supplement vitamin A, check with your doctor first. Some of the best antioxidants are vitamin E vitamin C, and beta-carotene. Several large studies have given a mixture of antioxidants to people to see if they help fight cancer. One study in China found that people who took a combination of vitamin E, beta-carotene, and the mineral selenium were 13 percent less likely to die from cancer. Natural antioxidants in foods may prevent cancer better than those found in supplements.
