Adventures In Busking

Saturday, October 7, 2007 I took the plunge and became a street magician and busker. I was invited to participate in this year's Old Milford Buskerfest and Artisan Show.

What is a busker? You have most likely seen and been entertained by a busker at various times and didn't even know it! Buskers are street performers who earn money by generating tips. The term "busker" includes: clowns, living statues, mimes, magicians, jugglers, sidewalk artists, dancers, and much more! Although Buskers are very popular in Europe and other countries, they can be found almost everywhere in America too.

The promoter, Suzanne does a wonderful job organizing the festival. Performers were spaced with artisans in between. Each busker was given a nice tip bucket with a colorful sign reminding the patrons to tip. There were also signs throughout the venue explaining what busking is.I am sure this helped many to know what to expect.

There were musicians, jugglers, fire-eaters, several magicians, face painting, and arts and crafts galore. Food vendors offered various delicacies, although I was surprised there were not more food booths, overall there was an excellant balance of food, crafts and entertainment.

I spent over 8 hours on the street performing. Folks were very generous. Lots of dollar bills, but a few fives and tens too. It was very different from doing a 45 minute stage show and I learned a lot.
