Spring Pond Equipment Check Up

Spring is almost here and now is the time to check your pond filters, pumps, lighting and other accessories to make sure your equipment is ready to go. It is a good idea to clean your pumps and filters even if you did it before putting them away last fall. Dust and other debris can accumulate even in storage units. A simple flush of filters and a rinse of the equipment with a garden hose should be all you need to do. Don’t forget to wipe off the lighting equipment as well.

Check Your Equipment for Signs of Damage

If your filters are old, spring is a great time to replace them so they won’t clog or simply not work at the height of the season when filters and other pond equipment may be sold out. Inspect each piece of equipment for cracks in cords as well as broken or damaged equipment. Take the time to plug in your equipment before submersing it in the pond. In the event your equipment does not work you will be glad you did this. Even if it worked fine last fall that is no guarantee it will still work this spring.

Watch For Signs of Animal Life

Another reason to clean and inspect your equipment is because an animal or other critter may have made a nest in it. Mice love to chew up soft materials and use it as nesting. Birds also look for a warm place to spend the winter months and anything they can nest in or on may become their new home.

Environmentally Friendly Options for Replacing Old Equipment

Older equipment that is past its prime should be replaced. A great way to help the environment is to choose solar equipment in place of electrical equipment. There is a wide variety of lighting, filters and pump options available that you can choose from. If your local pond dealer does not carry solar equipment, ask them if they can order it. If not, look online. There are numerous dealers and a ton of information available to help you make an informed choice. Another advantage of replacing your old equipment with new solar powered equipment is you will save money on your electric bill and not have to worry about electricity and cords near your water garden. If for no other reason than safety purposes, now is a great time to rethink the equipment you are using in your pond.
