Remote computer repair is not a brand new technology, but it is becoming increasingly popular among busy users. The process is simple – you begin by allowing your technician temporary remote access to your PC. They will typically scan for problems and either diagnose the issues or make repairs, depending on what you have agreed upon.
Having your computer repaired remotely is convenient for many reasons and the most popular I hear are:
- Scheduling is more flexible - Although you will usually need to be at your PC to allow the remote repair to be done, you can choose to do so when it’s convenient for you, whether that’s late at night or first thing in the morning.
- It’s less expensive Without the added expense of paying for a technician to come out to your home, basic repairs or a diagnosis are much cheaper to get done remotely.
- You can see it for yourself - Allowing a remote repair means that you get to sit back and watch the technician work. It’s pretty cool to see files opened and software downloaded on your computer without your hands on the keys!
There are times when Remote Repair isn’t feasible, though. If you have a severe computer problem, such as not being able to boot up or a recurring BSOD (Blue Screen of Death), a remote tech won’t be able to help. You will need Internet access, so if you have a virus or worm that prevents you from getting online, a remote tech won’t be able to do anything. Also, if you have a hardware malfunction of some sort, a remote tech won’t be able to repair it online. When you can’t utilize the services of a remote technician and doing the repairs yourself isn’t feasible, you may want to strongly consider taking your PC to a professional – face to face.
Allowing someone to access your computer remotely may sound somewhat dangerous, but the process is actually quite safe. Secure connections are used, and access can be limited to just you and the technician. Remote access privileges can also be revoked. So if you’re concerned about malware through remote access, don’t be. It’s worth the effort to allow an authentic computer repair technician access to your life, however temporary.
