Churches Pray to End Slavery

On Sunday March 25, 2007 churches in the United Kingdom will join together to sing "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)" by Chris Tomlin and pray for the end of slavery.

Although slavery has been illegal for quite some time on paper in reality there are still hundreds of men, women and children held in bondage in every country in the world including America. It is estimated that as many as 27 million people are still enslaved around the globe. Most of the human trafficking is happening in the sex trade which is profiting so many countries. Amazing Grace Sunday is designed to bring attention to this horrible situation and shine a light on the darkness of slavery. It is only by acknowledging our problems that we can correct them.

In addition to singing the Tomlin rendition of Amazing Grace churches are also encouraged to download the lyrics of his adaptation and use them as inserts into church bulletins. You can do this by logging on to www.worshiptogether.com

Tomlin's adaptation of Amazing Grace is featured on Amazing Grace: Music Inspired by the Motion Picture. The movie Amazing Grace is the story of the life of antislavery pioneer William Wilberforce, and is directed by Michael Apted (The World is Not Enough, Coal Miner's Daughter).

The film stars Ioan Gruffudd (Black Hawk Down), Albert Finney (Erin Brockovich), Romola Garai (Vanity Fair), Michael Gambon (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban), Benedict Cumberbatch (Hawking), Rufus Sewell (Legend of Zorro), Ciaran Hinds (Rome) and introduces Youssou N'Dour.

Besides Tomlin's track the soundtrack also features music from Martina McBride (How Great Thou Art), Jars of Clay (I Need Thee Every Hour) and others.

When speaking of his rendition of the traditional hymn Tomlin stated in a recent press release "I wanted to keep the hymn exactly the way it was, as much as I could, with the heart of what I feel like John Newton was writing"
