Spring Cleaning

Every Spring, the sun shines and the houseperson's mind turns to Spring Cleaning. This doesn't need to involve a great expense or toxic cleaning substances. You can Spring Clean most of your house with just three non-toxic cleaning substances -- borax, vinegar, and baking soda.

Vinegar
Place a cup of vinegar in a bucket of warm water and wash walls and floors as usual. This is also a powerful disinfectant that is much less toxic than all those chlorine based cleaners. Not eveyone likes the smell, but I think it is better than clorox.

SCRUBBING OVENS AND COUNTER TOPS:

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a great over night oven cleaner. Sprinkle baking soda on the oven bottom and window. Dampen with a spray bottle. Let sit over night. Wipe off the dissolved grease the next morning.

It also is grat for non- scratch scrubbing. Just sprinkle on a sponge and scrub away. No scratches!

Onion and fruit bags

Often onions and fruits are sold in plastic net bags. These bags make great non-scratch scrubbies for dried on grease. Just save them after you eat the onions!

Some other helpful less toxic scrubbing tools are Epsom Salts and lemon juice.

Epsom Salts
Epsom salts can be used like Baking Soda to scrub and clean. Cheak out more uses at:
The Epsom Salt Page

Lemon Juice
Stains like grape juice on counter tops can be bleached with lemon juice. One dampens a cloth with lemon juice and lets the damp cloth sit over night on the stained area. This will bleach most stains on formica counters.

Cleaning Cloths
Rags make great cleaning cloths. There is no need for toxic laced fiber things from the grocery to dust and scrub. Recycle!

Carpet Freshing
Freshing your carpets by sprinkling a half and half mixture of borax and baking soda on them. Let sit overnight and then vaccum. This Kills fleas and other insects too!

So get started! You don't have to turn your house into a toxic waste dump to clean your house!
