Quilt Blocks of the States - Louisiana Variation 8

Louisiana Variation - 8" Quilt Block

The next block in our state block series is Louisiana Variation. We'll use the square-in-the-corner technique for greater accuracy.

Cutting Instructions:

Cut twelve 2-1/2" squares.

Cut four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles.

Cut four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles.

Sewing Instructions:

Step 1: With a pencil (or your favorite marking method), draw two diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of all brown 2-1/2" squares.

Step 2: Place a brown 2-1/2" square on the right end of an orange 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangle (right sides together) as shown below. Stitch a seam on the diagonal line that you drew Step 1. Trim the fabric above the sewn line to 1/4" and press the seam toward the brown fabric. Repeat on the left end and press the seam toward the brown fabric. Repeat three more times for a total of four flying geese units.

Step 3: Place a brown 2-1/2" square on the right end of a yellow 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangle (right sides together) as shown below. Stitch a seam on the diagonal line that you drew Step 1. Trim the fabric above the sewn line to 1/4" and press the seam toward the brown fabric. Repeat three more times for a total of four point units.

Step 4: With right sides together, stitch a flying geese unit (Step 2) to the top of a point unit (Step 3) as shown below. Repeat for a total of four.

Step 5: Arrange the sections as shown below and sew into rows (Diagram 1). Sew the rows (Diagram 2) together to finish the block (Diagram 3) .

Your block should measure 8-1/2" on all sides. It will measure 8" finished size when it is sewn into a quilt.
