The Love of Liz and Lucky

Lucky Spencer has not always been in love with Elizabeth Webber. When Liz first came to port Charles, Lucky couldn’t see past his crush on her sister Sarah to view Liz as anything more than a friend. Not until Valentine’s Day, 1998.

Lucky was walking through the park that night when he found Elizabeth wandering around. Her dress was torn and she was badly bruised. He took her to his Aunt Bobbie’s home to get cleaned up, and there learned she had been raped. Lucky vowed then to protect her no matter what. He stood by her side, working with her to find then man who raped her. The more time they spent together, the deeper their friendship grew.

The love that developed between the teens caused a rift between Lucky and his parents. After what happened to Liz, Lucky could think of no worse crime than rape. Discovering the secret of Laura’s rape—and that Luke was her rapist—was more than Lucky could handle. He didn’t know how Luke could claim to love Laura, or how she could forgive—let alone love—the man who violated her. Lucky made the decision to move out of their home. He took a job working in Jason Morgan’s bike shop, and began living in the apartment above the shop.

Liz and Lucky spent a lot of time together at an abandoned boxcar in the woods, making plans for their future together. Lucky wanted Liz to go to an art school in new York and promised to follow her wherever she needed to go. To prove he meant it, Lucky set up a surprise at an old church. He had the chapel decorated with white flowers and candles, and in a simple ceremony fro just the two of them, Lucky pledged his eternal love to Liz.

Their happiness was cut short by Lucky’s apparent death. A fire broke out in the bike shop, completely destroying the apartment. A body burned beyond recognition was identified as Lucky because of a necklace that he had been given by Liz.

A year later, a very much alive Lucky was back in Port Charles. Helena Cassadine had faked his death in order to use Lucky to destroy the Spencer family. Liz was overjoyed to see the love of her life alive, but Lucky had changed. He was angry and even accused his “friend” Jason of wanting Liz for himself. Before Lucky and his friends were able to break the control Helena had over him, she managed to erase the love he had for Liz.

In the coming years, Lucky and Liz both moved on with their lives. They remained close friends, but there was nothing romantic between them. Lucky dated Sarah and Summer, while Liz had Zander’s baby and married Ric. He became a police officer and she became a nurse at GH.

Eventually, they did find their way back to each other. They were married in a simple ceremony, surrounded by their family and friends.

While on their honeymoon, Lucky was critically injured when the train they were on collided with another train. He survived, and was later shot in the line of duty. In addition to a bullet wound, Lucky severely injured his back. He became addicted to the pain medication, and started to act recklessly. Though he lived his wife, his need for the pills clouded his judgment. Maxie Jones, who had nursed a crush on Lucky for years, was will to supply the pills, in exchange for sex.

Liz found Lucky and Maxie in their bed, and turned to Jason for comfort. Lucky admitted his problem and entered rehab. Liz learned she was pregnant. Lucky was determined to beat his addiction and win back Liz’s love and respect. Though the marriage did end in divorce, their mutual desire to raise Cameron and the new baby together led Lucky and Liz to remarry in March 2007.

Through all of the ups and downs, one thing has always remained—these two genuinely care about each other. Like any good relationship, theirs was built on friendship. That friendship has allowed Lucky and Liz to forgive each others shortcomings.

The strength of that friendship and love are being tested again. Liz was forced to admit in court that she slept with Jason, a fact that Lucky was unaware of for nearly a year. Liz denied in court that Jason is the father of her baby, but Lucky is questioning that. If she hid sleeping with Jason, could she be hiding something more?

Viewers know, as half of Port Charles knows, that Jason IS Jake’s father. The question now remains—is the love of Lucky and Liz strong enough to survive once Lucky learns the truth?
