Besides beginning with one start color, which is the program's Standard mode, you can also have two start colors. This Duo-Colors mode will build color palettes based on your two start colors. Because my source image has both a pink and lavender scoop of ice cream, this mode is a better choice for my project. As you can see, by setting these two start colors, the program suggests a different color palette that is just as natural and pleasing to the eye.

The program has a third mode, called the Saturated Colors mode. This mode generates color palettes with more intense colors which can be used in many ways such as accent colors. In the example, this mode generates a color palette with some great accent colors. I used the more intense lavender color as the accent color for a Stroke Layer Style in Photoshop^R.

Now that I have the Duo-Colors and Saturated Colors palettes that I wish to use for my project, I can drag individual color swatches from the GenoPal Pro palette layout to anywhere on my computer screen. I can even drag them over my Photoshop workspace. This is great because I need to fine tune the color swatches. Each color swatch displays the RGB information for that color and has controls for tweaking the Hue, Saturation and Brightness (HSB). If you prefer to use HEX, HSB or CMYK values, you can easily change this setting in the Options Menu. As you can see, I dragged eight colors from the color palette, fine tuned each and used them to build ten color-coordinated papers for my digital scrapbooking project.

GenoPal Pro has several other features that ease your workflow. You have many options for saving your favorite color palettes. Besides the GenoPal Palette (.pal) format, you can also save your color palettes in the Adobe® ACO Swatch (.aco), Adobe® Swatch Exchange (.ase) and GIMP Palette (.gpl) formats for use in other graphics programs. If you prefer to save them in an image format, you can save the palettes in BMP, PNG, JPEG and GIF formats.

The GenoPal Pro palette layout is very flexible and customizable. In the example, I used the default 16-Patch layout. But sometimes you need to work with only a few colors in your palette or you might want more than 16 colors. In that case, you can choose one of the other built-in layouts which include the 4-Patch, Slim (85 colors) and Huge (510 colors) layouts and you can even create a custom layout. You have the option to customize the size of the color swatches and the space between swatches, as well as the number of rows and columns in your palette layout. You can also choose between a black or white background theme. Because you can have more than one color palette open in the workspace at the same time, you can copy and paste color swatches between palettes.
