Cross Country Scramble

On Super Bowl Sunday our Director of Golf at Mill Creek Golf Club proposed this Cross Country Scramble in his Newsletter. This ABC scramble is limited to the first 48 individuals who entered. The golf shop will pair you by handicap. This 1:00 p.m. shotgun start will get you to your Super Bowl party on time. Men play white tees, ladies play red tees. Par is 46 for the eight holes that include one par four, three par fives, and four par sevens. The cost is $15.00 per person. A triple bogey ten may win money in an optional skins game.

The day arrived and all signed up were placed in teams according to handicaps. I was placed with three other guys and we were given instruction and diagram as to where the eight holes were laid out. It was a puzzle to figure out just how we would find each tee off blocks. Everything was well planned as we set off to find our first tee boxes. I was placed with three guys who I knew and we started off for an unusual round of golf.

My team was to start on the fourth hole set up which was tee off on number nine fairway heading over that green and trees to another fairway. The ladies tee boxes were a good advantage so that helped. My three partners were good golfers and two of them could hit the ball a long ways, but sometimes we had a hard time finding their ball.

By changing the layout of this course some of the holes were par 7 and it made you think about just where to aim your shots. The lay-out of the eight hole cross country course was truly amazing as it was over and around trees, sand and the water came into play on one hole. My guys could hit a long ball so that helped but sometimes their swing was so strong that they over powered the ball. When it was in sync it was great but sometimes it found areas not on the line we were suppose to go.

I held my own in most places as they had to use my drive a few time and made a few long putts. It was a fun afternoon and the final outcome was that we all were under par with a 39 being the lowest score and my team with a 43. Everyone was fairly close so it worked to be a great afternoon of a fun Scramble. Prizes were awarded with gift certificates to the Pro Shop.

There are many more different kinds of these Sunday afternoon tournaments coming up throughout the summer. The next one will be a Par 3 Scramble as all 18 holes will be adjusted to be a par 3. This event will be held on Sunday March 3rd and will cost $20.00 to enter. Hopefully someone will have a hole-in-one with this event. I will give you a final report as to how this event unfolds.
