Memoral Day

To often we forget what Memorial Day is all about. We get caught up with the parties, the beaches and the travelling. I challenge everyone to take a few moments this weekend and think about what Memorial Day really is. Take time to remember all of those that have fought for our country and our freedom. And remember those who are still fighting for our country.

Although it is not technically the first day of summer, Memorial Day seems to be a celebration that summer is here. Children will be home from school and playing. People will be gathering together to parties. With these things in mind, it's important to remember safety when enjoying summer activities.

Here are a few important safety rules to remember:

Don't leave children unattended.
Don't leave children unattended in a pool or anywhere near a pool alone.
Never leave children near a kiddie pool unattended.
If you live near a lake or pond, be extra attentive to where your children are.
If participating in water sports, everyone should always wear a life jacket.
Be careful at the beach. Listen to lifeguard warnings especially if there are riptides. Do not let young children wander off.
Use protective sunscreen when outdoors.
Make sure children have protective sunscreen on when playing outdoors.
Children will be outside more often now. Do not leave them to play outdoors alone.
Don't let children play in the road.
Do strap young children into swings.
Do not let children near tiki torches.
Keep children away from hot barbecues.
If you have a pool and children, make sure to have a pool fence and an alarm.
Make children wear safety helmets when riding their bicycles.
If entertaining, watch that children do not accidentally drink alcohol.
Do not leave food out to spoil. Keep foods with mayonnaise or eggs refrigerated until the last minute before serving.
Do not allow people to drink and drive.
Make sure guests have a designated driver.
Many do not know this but never eat raw fish and drink alcohol. It will most definitely make you sick.

These are just some of the things we all need to remember during the summer months and throughout the year. So with that, I wish everyone a wonderful and safe Memorial Day weekend.
