Out of Time

Hello, and welcome back! We've cranked up the air conditioner again to try to keep ourselves cool while Mother Nature decides if it's summer or fall. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed for fall, or at least nice weather like we had a week ago, when it wasn't too hot to work outside. I do still have some summer romances to share with you, however.

This time, we have Out of Time (Grand Central) by Samantha Graves. Jillian Talbot likes her job as a museum curator. And she hopes to keep her psychic talent a secret now; that doesn't mean, however, that she doesn't still enjoy touching ancient artifacts to discover their real stories, stories she can't share without giving away her ability. But one night after work, someone tries to kidnap her again. Former treasure-hunter Simon Bonner rescues her. At least, that's what she thinks at first, but Simon has his own plans for her, and they don't only involve rescue. Simon needs her to find an ancient treasure and save his ex-wife. But he can't tell her that last part, right? In any case, to help them find this treasure, Simon's got a very old glass lens left by his late ex-best friend and recent husband of Simon's ex-wife. Everyone keeping up? Jillian's not a wilting flower, but she's not exactly the trek through the Mexican jungle type either. Still, she'll do what she has to to find the treasure and get back to her life. But there are all sorts of twists and turns along the way, including betrayals by people they both trust and a deepening attraction between Simon and Jillian. If you can fully suspend your sense of disbelief, you may be able to ignore some of the really New Age-y material toward the end of this one. If not, you may not like this so much. As for me, well, I've done a lot of reading on various subjects over the years, and I find the really New Age-y stuff to mostly be not my cup of tea. I have to say, I didn't love the rest of this one either, even before all that. Jillian didn't grab me as a heroine, nor Simon as a hero. Sure, he'll still save the woman he used to be married to, despite what she did to him, but for a smart man, he takes far too long to figure some things out. I'm borrowing only two and a half of Cupid's five arrows for this one.

Until next time, happy reading!
