A beautiful landscape makes Sonora one of the premier locations for outdoor adventures. Visitors can enjoy golf, mountain biking, hunting, hiking, fishing, diving, snorkeling and camping. No matter what your pleasure, there are an abundance of camping options. Let’s take a look at some of the most notable campgrounds in Sonora:

Fishing and diving at Rocky Point. Rocky Point is a beautiful and tourist friendly area of Sonora. It’s located 62 miles from the US border in what is called the “Free Zone” which means there’s no entry paperwork to fill out. Known for amazing volcanic rock formations and sunny beaches, Rocky Point is ideal for fishing, swimming diving and catching a few rays. There’s also an active nightlife for the after dark adventure seekers.

Mountain Biking in La Jolla and Hermasillo. Hermasillo is a great place to begin a mountain biking adventure and is one of the top stops on any mountain biking vacation. Other notable mountain biking locations include, Cerro Pico Guacamayas, Sierra Los Ajos, San Jose, La Charola, San Luis, La Mariquita, Hachita hueca, La Madera, Aconchi, Mazatán, El Pinacate y Sierra libre.

La Jolla is another fine mountain biking location with abundant camping sites in nearby cities including the above three Rocky Point parks.

Ecotourism is taking hold of beautiful Sonora and camping isn’t hard to find. El Pinacate is a volcanic region located in the northwest of the State of Sonora including Rocky Point, San Luis Rio Colorado and Plutarco Elias Calles counties.

Observed from space El Pinacate resembles a large moon crater. It is the result of hot magma building up pressure deep in the earth’s crust for 4 million years. Quite a notable side trip if you enjoy amazing geologic formations and environments.

In addition to the other camping options in Rocky Point, The Boulders, http://www.thebouldersrv.com/index.html, is 28 miles from El Pinacate. Additionally the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve offers two campgrounds. Reservations are required and there is no water available at the reserve. It’s a gorgeous location for those interested in roughing it amongst nature’s beauty.
