New Succulents for 2009

Succulent and cacti lovers will find a number of new plants at garden centers, nurseries, and online. Here are some recent introductions.

Spurges or Euphorbias

Though Euphorbia Jessie isn’t exactly new, it deserves another look. Tissue culture now means the plants will be much more widely available than they were in the past.

This sensational variety has got to be one of the most colorful spurges around. Though the plant starts out green in the spring, the bracts soon turn sunny yellow with richly colored darker margins. By the time autumn arrives,
the shades deepen to red.

Jessie can reach five feet in height. So, give the plants plenty of space in the garden. This is a hybrid of Euphorbia polychroma and Euphorbia griffithii Fireglow. Jessie tends to assume an upright growth habit. This hardy perennial is recommended for zones four through nine.

Silver Fog Euphorbia is similar to the award winning Diamond Frost Euphorbia. Silver Fog can be grown indoors year round, especially for winter. However, it is also a great choice for outdoor container gardens.

Silver Fog has an attractive, rounded growth habit. This variety has short, rounded foliage. Tiny, frilly, pure white blooms cover the stems.

Silver Shadow Euphorbia is similar to Diamond Frost and Silver Fog. However, this variety is much more vigorous. Silver Fog is more arching than upright, while Silver Shadow is taller and wider.

Gelato Buck Bay Daisies

This series features five separate flower colors. The daisy-like blooms resemble those of the Delospermas or ice-plants. The shades include yellow, bright red, white, and orange. The Dark Pink has a large white eye in the center. Blooming the first year from seeds, Buck Bay daisies can be grown as annuals.

Kalanchoes

Mayon kalanchoe is a great indoor pot plant or outdoor landscape plant for summer. This shapely variety has dark green leaves. This offers unique flower colors among the kalanchoes. With white around the margins, the blossoms range from pale pink to red.

Milos kalanchoe is a compact plant with large, attractive foliage. This is a very floriferous variety. It features golden yellow blooms with reddish-orange centers.

Fuego kalanchoe is a tall, shapely plant with lovely scarlet blooms. Parina kalanchoe has pinkish-rose blossoms. The tall, leafy plants are upright.

Nema kalanchoe tends to have a rounded, compact shape. It features purplish-red to plum colored blooms.

This year brings several new colors in the Calandiva series. The new Calandiva kalanchoes include Golddy, a buttery gold. There is also Gabor, a bright yellow. Bright Red and Golden Yellow are also new.
