Style Myths from Mom

My, my, my, did mom hand down some serious style myths. If you're an 8 to 5 professional there is no such thing as rhinestones to spice up your wardrobe right? Wrong, you can always wear a nice rhinestone studded top under an open blazer to spice up any lazy work day. Just don't go over board, remember everything in moderation. Here's another good one, you can only wear open toe shoes in the spring or summer. Yep, you guessed it she was wrong here too. You can were open toe shoe year around; they are the perfect way to step up any outfit.

This one is my personal favorite, no white shoes after Labor Day. I was born and raised in the south and this was a capital fashion offense. This fashion rule could not be further from the truth, to be honest a nice white pair of pumps can really wake up a nice black suit. Another good one that came along later is that anyone can wear a mini skirt. This is totally untrue, there does come a time when you have to consider you age as you consider you style. There is nothing scarier than a 47 year old woman with the mini-skirt that thinks she's "still got it". I just recently heard of people wanting to wear white as a guest at a wedding. ARE YOU INSANE! This is unreal, not at any point is it ok to distract attention from the bride on her wedding day. When you find out what the colors are for the wedding feel free to coordinate your outfit, but if you wear white you’re only going to come across as if you’re trying to steal the show.

There are many that are over the top and frankly down right silly rules but, I think these next few are the chart toppers. When it comes down to it no were should it say your shoes have to match your purse. In fact as long as your shoes and bag match your outfit you’re pretty much in the clear. I like stripes and I like plaids but normally if I see them together it's always a big thumb down. Well I did see a young lady one day a few weeks back who had on stripes and plaid and it really worked, only and I do mean only because one didn't overpower the other. The stripes were very subtle while the plaid was bold and eye catching. This was a great way to get noticed with out be a fashion faux pas. I know this is going to make my mom gasp, but these rules had to be thrown from the nearest window and I mean fast.
