Paul Blart - Mall Cop

In the Columbia Picture's comedy Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Kevin James stars as Paul Blart, a single father who wants to be a New Jersey police officer. Though he does surprisingly well, despite his size, hypoglycemia causes him to pass out and he fails the course. Living with his mother and daughter, they constantly encourage him to find a girlfriend on a dating website, as his wife had previously left him with a deep feeling of lonely. And, even though Paul fails to become a police officer, he manages to do the next best thing and make ends meet as a security officer at West Orange Pavilion Mall, which he takes very seriously, though he receives little to no respect from the patrons.

As Paul introduces a new trainee named Veck Sims to the mall and teaches him the ropes, Paul sees, and, instantly, falls for a kiosk owner named Amy. He takes every opportunity to get a glimpse of her, even the mall cameras, but just doesn't have the courage to tell her what he thinks or feels.

On the day of Black Friday, a group of robbers, disguised as Santa's helpers, take over the mall, taking some of the mall employees as hostages, including Amy, and, eventually, Paul's daughter, Maya. With Amy and Maya in danger, Paul knows that he's the only one who can save them and take back his mall.

Children will really like this film because of the physical comedy of Kevin James and the extreme sporting skills and acrobatics of Santa's Helpers. I even enjoyed seeing that. However, as an adult, I wasn't impressed with the film because I had really expected to have bigger laughs past what I had seen in the trailer. Granted, there were a few scenes that I know I chuckled at, but, as the credits were rolling, I was slightly disappointed. I think Kevin James is hilarious, and I've seen him play characters slightly similar. But, I felt that the dullness and awkwardness of his character had a tendency to really overshadow the comedic aspect. Surprisingly, the character that I enjoyed most was Pahud. He didn't have many scenes, but they were chuckle worthy. So, overall, it's nice children's movie. But, adults will probably walk away feeling a little cheated.
