Springtime for an Autism Family

Spring is such a busy time for families with kids on the autism spectrum. The onslaught of issues to tend to begins with daylight savings time. Waking up early in the dark is not an easy change for anyone and then going to bed when it is still light outside can make it difficult to fall asleep in a timely manner.

Here is a listing of all the events that take planning and organizing to shape the autism family once spring has arrived:

1. Spring break - help the child with autism self regulate. Learn some floortime basics.

2. Easter means baking, classroom parties, gluten free goodies, Soft Clothing and seamless socks

3. Preparing for summer camp

4. IEP season means going over IEP Goals and Progress Reports and extended school year preparations.

5. Mother's Day - gift ideas and food options that are gfcf

6. Fathers Day - this could be supervised vists. Books for the men in the autism community to gain more insights into the spectrum.

7. Graduation time - year end gifts

8. Surviving summer - summertime blues for an autism family, keeping kids with autism safe around pools, dogs and fireworks.

Thankfully March is just about over. To give you an idea of what has taken place for this autismfamily thus far in March:

1. Attended a Bully Prevention Seminar
2. Took Nick to 7th grade writing test for CAVA
3. Attended a Seminar on Nursing Svcs
4. Participated in two meetings as parent leader with LAUSD Superintendent
5. Had annual visit from social worker for IHSS
6. A new roof in two days - Building & Safety Code Violation for Landlord
7. Went to free exhibit day for CSUN Expo at LAX Marriott
8. Celebrated Nick's 14th birthday - 4 books and 9 DVDs (Blue Planet, Jack Hanna, Crocodile Hunter and Jeff Corwin)
9. Attended monthly CAC meeting (current term as Secretary) - presentation on Conservatorships
10. Listened to a two hour webinar on Verbal Behavior Approach to teaching children with autism
11. Planning for the gluten free twitter party
12. Attend a Pecs training at Matthew's school from AAC dept
13. Monthly conference call with Nick's special ed and general ed teachers

At all the meetings I attended I utilized my digital recorder. In the near future a recap of these meetings will be posted.
