Red Dead Revolver PS2

Red Dead Revolver is a classic western story complete with rolling tumbleweeds, a lonesome hero and the quick-draw slaying of bad guys.

You play the part of Red, a boy born on the prairie to a gold-seeking father and his Native American wife. Your peaceful life takes a turn for the worse when your father's corrupt partner kills off your parents to take over your mine. Wounded, seeking revenge, you grow into an adult and learn the ways of the gun and knife. The rest of the game is about you tracking down various bad guys and blowing them away.

They've put a lot of effort into giving an "old time feel" to this game. The cut scenes are deliberately laced with flecks and lines, as if it was an old movie you were watching. The environments are dusty, with red cliffs on the horizon, twisty trees near streams, you feel parched just playing.

The sound is reasonably good as well. From the western drawl to the period music, you feel right at home with all those spaghetti westerns you've enjoyed.

This game is definitely a violent one. Bad guys laugh while they kill woman, point blank shoot dogs in the face, arms go flying off of the shoulders they once were attached to. Any parents looking to buy this game should be aware it's not a "sanitized" version of the Wild West. It shows the lawlessness in full detail.

Also, for anyone used to PS3 and XBox 360 graphics, this is clearly a game of the "previous generation". The characters are blocky. The textures are sometimes a little repetitive. Even with that being said, though, they did an amazing job with what they had available. Character animation is smooth and the glaring sunshine coming down onto the baked desert floor really does blind you at times.

Well recommended for any fan of the western genre, who enjoys tracking down those who have done you wrong.

Rating: 9/10
