Clinic Implants Wrong Embryo

Sean and Carolyn Savage discovered they were indeed pregnant and expecting their fourth child after a decade of fertility problems. Then, in a turn that can only be described as heartbreaking, they were informed that the baby wasn't theirs, that the fertility clinic has accidentally implanted another couple's embryo.

The Savages we offered two choices: to abort the pregnancy or to carry to term and immediately relinquish custody of the child to his biological parents. They chose the latter because they strongly opposed abortion and decided to put the child's well-being before their sense of disappointment.

"It’ll be exceptionally difficult... But at the same time, we’ve been preparing this for months," Sean Savage told NBC's Meredith Vieira.

The Savage's lawyers have been in contact the child's parents and all the parties involved are finalizing plans for the baby's birth. The families interactions are civil and the Savages say they only want what is best for everyone involved, including not intruding on the biological family's life.

Carolyn Savage has been told this must be her last pregnancy, although the Savages embryos remain frozen and ready for implantation. The family has decided to allow this situation to settle and then have their embryos implanted in a surrogate for one, final try to biologically expand their family.

I don't support the practice of IVF (in vitro fertilization), but I do wholeheartedly agree with and support their decision to carry the baby to term , regardless of his parentage. It was a heartrending choice to make and I commend them for putting the child first. I sincerely wish all the parties well in this extremely difficult situation and hope the baby is born happy, healthy, and without complication.
