New Succulents for House Plants

For 2010, a number of new succulents will arrive in garden centers and nurseries. Some of these are especially suitable as house plants. These include the following.

Aloe Sunset

This new hybrid has striking leaves with red along the margins. The colorful foliage also has tinges of pink as well. When grown outdoors, this is hardy to zone eight. In order to retain its bright colors, this plant must be grown in full sun.

Aloe Christmas Carol

Also hardy to zone eight, this aloe is named for the vivid red along the margins of the leaves. The foliage is deep green.

New Crassulas

One of the most striking new crassulas is Crassula corymbulosa Sharks Tooth. This delightful new plant has deep green, triangular foliage. The leaves are arranged so that they neatly overlap. When grown in full sun, the color deepens to red. The stems are arranged in a pendant fashion.

Sharks tooth is nearly a foot in height. It can reach up to two feet across when mature. This plant is very suitable for hanging baskets.

Crassula tetragona Spike has bright green, needle-like foliage. The leaves are crowded along the upright stems. When mature Spike looks like a small shrub. It is a little over a foot tall, and is slightly wider than tall.

Both of these crassulas need full sun. They can be grown as houseplants. These could spend the summer months outdoors, but aren’t considered winter hardy in colder areas of the country.

New Kalanchoes

For 2010 several new vividly colored Calandivas will be introduced. There is a new series named after stars, including Gabor, Tylo, Jolie, and Leonardo.

Calandiva Tylo kalanchoe has bright red blossoms that open in large heads. A dense, well branched plant, it is slightly shorter than those most of the early blooming, red flowering Calandivas. The blossoms last for a very long period.

Makian kalanchoe has very large, deep red blossoms in large attractive heads. This well branched plant is vigorous and very reliable.

There are several new colors in the Forever Midi kalanchoe series. These include Forever Maxi Yellow as well as Berry Pink and Yellow. The shapely, well branched plants are early flowering. There will also be five new colors in the Queen kalanchoe series.
