Playpens – Play Gyms
When you are training your bird or attempting to retrain a problem child bird you will always want the bird to be below you – neck down or lower. This is a dominance/social thing with birds. This also means the bird can’t be on your shoulder until he or she is perfectly trained/tamed.

The bird cage you purchase may or may not have a playpen or play gym on top of the cage. Either way you may still need a separate play gym unless your bird is perfectly trained and tamed. Besides, if you keep your birds wings clipped it is nice to take the bird outside with you or into another room. There are so many reasons to have a playpen or play gym I couldn’t even begin to list them all.
