Secret Speakers by K.S.R. Kingworth - a review

After living the last nine years of her thirteen-year-old life hiding in the cellar with only her dog for company, Fair is finally leaving the darkness and isolation to join the hoomin of Cloven Grave as an adult. Nine years ago, the cruel and harsh ruler, Harrold King, had a dream that a child would overthrow his rule, so he decreed all children to be taken from their parents-- Fair's own brother included. Once she is named a maiden, Fair can no longer be taken by Harrold. Unfortunately for Fair, Harrold has had other dreams and once he learns her true identity, he is intent on enslaving her.

Fair also learns her true identity, which was kept hidden from her all the years she spent in hiding. Now she has an important quest to undertake, one that will end the Fallow Era and begin the Plater Era. She must find Selador's Gate and reopen the way to the Mother and Father of Light.

I have mixed feelings about Secret Speakers and the Search for Selador's Gate. There is a very definite Christian subtext- a king fearing for his throne whisks away children, the Father of Light sending his son to guide the hoomin. The characters and plot are well written enough that this didn't necessarily bother me. But I found the further into the book I read, the more little details didn't mesh and this bothered me. On a few occasions, details were brought up that had no bearing on the story whatsoever. I was carried away by the story nonetheless.

My Recommendation
Secret Speakers and the Search for Selador's Gate by K.S.R. Kingworth is not something I would have picked up on my own. But with that being said, I did enjoy reading Fair's story, even if I did get a little lost in the details.
