Mobile Suit Gundam is an anime series created by Sunrise.

The series is set in the Universal Century year 0079. At the beginning of the series, the Principality of Zeon has declared independence from the Earth Federation, and Zeon has launched a war of independence. While Zeon is smaller, they have developed a new type of weapon called a mobile suit, which is a humanoid weapon.

The first episode of the series sees the White Base, a newly deployed Federation warship, arriving at a secret research base at the Side 7 colony. The warship's mission is to pick up the Federation's newest weapon. However, Zeon forces follow them, and one of the Zeon reconnaissance team members disobeys orders and attacks the colony.

Amuro Ray, the son of one of the crew members of the White Base, finds the Federation's new weapon and its manual. The weapon is a mobile suit called the RX-78 Gundam, and Amuro is able to pilot it and neutralize the situation. Afterwards, the White Base sets out with a newly formed crew of civilian recruits and refugees.

The English dub of Mobile Suit Gundam has one major difference when compared to the other anime series from the late 1970s and early 1980s that were dubbed into English. In the English dub of Mobile Suit Gundam, there is no tiptoeing around the idea that people die; in fact, dead bodies are shown on the screen, and are said to be dead (instead of simply being "passed out"). However, I have to admit that when I watched the first episode, I thought the pacing was a little slow until right near the end. But at the same time, I can see why Mobile Suit Gundam is considered to be the landmark anime that it has become.

Unlike other English dubs of anime series from the late 1970s and 1980s, I really can't recommend Mobile Suit Gundam for younger audiences. Personally, I would recommend Mobile Suit Gundam to anime viewers who are 14 or 15 years of age and older.
