Cardcaptor Sakura is based on a manga series written by CLAMP. When Nelvana produced the original English dub, they changed the title to Cardcaptors, and also refocused the series in an attempt to appeal more to a male audience. Also, when the series aired on American television, the eighth episode was aired as the first episode, and only 39 episodes of the original 70 were dubbed and aired.

Sakura Kinomoto (known as Sakura Avalon in the English dub version) is the main character of Cardcaptor Sakura. She's a 10-year-old fourth grader. One day, she's home alone and hears strange noises coming from her father's study. When she goes to investigate the noise, she finds a mysterious book in there, which she opens. When she opens the book, she accidentally releases Clow Cards, the magical cards that were sealed away in the book. Cerberus (nicknamed Kero), the guardian of the book, is awakened. Since Sakura is the one who managed to release the cards, Kero makes it her job to recapture the cards. Kero teaches her what she needs to know. As a cardcaptor, Sakura must battle the magical personification of the card, defeat it, and seal it away.

The Clow Cards were created by a half-English half-Chinese sorcerer named Clow Reed. He gave each card its own personality and characteristics, and the cards can also take on alternate forms when they're activated. When Clow Reed died, the cards were sealed within the Clow Book (which is the book that Sakura found her in father's study). In the eighth episode, the character of Syaoran Li is introduced. It turns out he is a distant relative of Clow Reed (on his mother's side), which leads Syaoran to believe that he should inherit the Clow Cards. Syaoran starts out as an antagonist for Sakura, but the relationship between them changes as the series progresses.

Cardcaptor Sakura is a show that will probably be more enjoyed by girls than by boys, especially with the cute tone of the series and the personality given to Sakura. Also, younger viewers can probably relate to the 10-year-old heroine. Visually, I didn't really see anything in the series that would be inappropriate for younger viewers to watch. However, I would personally recommend Cardcaptor Sakura to anime viewers who are 10 or 11 years of age and older.
