Selling Digital Scraps and Clipart

I receive many email questions about how to get started selling digital art as digital scraps and clipart. Here are just a few of the most common questions.

Clipart vs Digital Scraps
Clip art and digital scraps are two popular ways to sell your artwork. Both are part of the hobby industry. Digital scraps are designed to be used by digital and traditional scrapbookers. Clipart is used by a wider group of crafters. For example, the site called Scrap Girls sells digital scrapbooking products and pcCrafter sells clipart. Check the links below to get an idea of what is being sold on each type of site.

Size of Design Elements
The size of your artwork will depend on how you expect it to be used. Most digital scraps are designed to fit a 12" x 12" scrapbook page. So the size of your individual design elements, such as fonts, buttons, frames and other embellishments, will need to fit a 12" x 12" design. The same goes for clipart. The size of the craft project will determine the size of the individual design elements.

Most clipart and digi scrap sites have free downloads. You can learn a lot by downloading these free downloads and studying them in Photoshop. One thing that you will find common to both clipart and digi scraps is the 300 dpi resolution. Most digital craft projects are printed on a home inkjet printer. The 300 dpi resolution gives good results. Most commercial sites require their designers to use 300 dpi.

Software
Most artists use PhotoshopR to create their digi scraps and clipart. Some use PhotoshopR Elements or Paint Shop ProR. If you are serious about becoming a digital scrap or clipart designer, you will probably be reading many online tutorials about how to create these products. Most of these tutorials are written for Photoshop. Take this into consideration when purchasing your software.

Where to Sell
When you are ready to start selling your digi scraps and clipart, you have several options. Many artists sell on digital scrapbooking sites such as the ones listed below. You can also sell on sites such as Artfire.com, iCraft.ca and etsy.com.

To find openings for digital designers on digi scrap sites, do a Google search for "digital scrap designer open calls". Most sites are looking to hire two types of designers. The Product Designers are artists who make the products (that would be you). The other type is Layout Designers. These designers do not make digi scraps product themselves but use the Products Designer's products to create scrapbook layouts both for the site and customers. There are many new digi scrap sites popping up all the time. The sites listed below have been around long enough to have a good forum and gallery - two good sources for information.
