Women all over the country need our help. In a huge step to make sure that happens, Planned Parenthood has started a campaign that needs as many supporters as possible. I am one, I hope by the end of this article you will be too.

Planned Parenthood is calling it the Birth Control Matters Campaign. The goal of their campaign is to make no cost prescription birth control available to all women, in any form of birth control that is best suited for each individual woman, at no cost. Not only would this reduce the number of unintended pregnancies dramatically, but also, abortions. A win/win for all sides, and most importantly women.

On average a women will be fertile and try to avoid becoming pregnant for thirty plus years. Statistics show one third of women voters alone, in the United States have struggled with the cost of prescription birth control. I am one of those women. Odds are you or someone you know is as well.

It also means that women aren’t able to use prescription birth control in a consistent manner, forcing them to use the less reliable over the counter forms, which also in most cases and for many women don’t come cheap.

No form of birth control is one size fits all for women. There are many types of birth control, many ways it can be used or delivered, and many reasons, it is important for women to choose the best type for themselves. It is after all, a prescription, written by the woman’s doctor. The person who knows best what each individuals needs are. Most of those are not easily affordable.

In my last article, I wrote of the difficulty religion throws on a woman regarding birth control, and my own personal struggle with it. The struggle remains. My insurance may not cover the procedure I want, and so I was forced to go with a birth control option that while is for the most part safe, carries a higher risk of complications, due to my age. The option I wanted, but am still waiting for, does not carry the risk. However, my provider is in a Catholic hospital. Sterilization and many forms of birth control are frowned upon. Undue judgment placed on me and many other women across the world.

The new health care reform law is the key to advancing women’s health. It is the biggest way to make the change happen in forty five years. The law must make it mandatory for health plans to cover and provide birth control with no co pays as part of their prevention provision.
