Olivia - Girl Name

Wondering where the name Olivia came from? Unfortunately, the derivation of the name is uncertain. Shakespeare used it in Twelfth Night, and he may have based on the Latin word for "olive," oliva, or on the male name Oliver, or...on some other name or word.

One thing we do have a lot of information about is usage. After being a moderately popular baby name for decades, Olivia slowly declined in popularity from the late '40s through the early '70s. The decline was reversed with the help of a character named Olivia on the popular TV show The Waltons (1971-1981). The name plateaued at about 200th place for a little more than a decade, then in the mid-1980s it began to rise again.
