Quarterbacks 101

This is Football 101: Quarterbacks Part 1. These are 10 men that you should know something about when watching football. I know there are probably 10 more quarterbacks that should be on this list, but I only have room for 10 questions on each quiz. Maybe there will be a second quiz later. Study this and then take my quiz.

Johnny Unitas was a 9th round draft pick in 1955 by the Pittsburg Steelers. He was cut and picked up by the Baltimore Colts the next year. His first NFL throw resulted in a touchdown for the opposing team. That was one of the last mistakes he made. As the first player to pass for 40,000 yards, he had 47 straight games with at least one touchdown. He was the NFL player of the year 3 times and All-NFL 6 times. He was in 10 Pro Bowls and was MVP of 3 of them. He retired in 1973 after one year with the San Diego Chargers.

Bart Starr was a 17th round draft pick by the Green Bay Packers in 1956. With the help of Vince Lombardi, he became a great player. He played in Super Bowls I and II winning MVP for both. Under him, the Packers won 6 Western Division Championships, 5 NFL titles, and 2 Super Bowls. He played in 4 Pro Bowls. He retired in 1971 with the Packers.

Joe Namath was AFL rookie of the year in 1965. He threw for more than 4,000 yards in 1967, becoming the first quarterback in history to reach that milestone. With the Jets, he guaranteed the Super Bowl win against the Colts in 1968. He retired in 1977 after one year with the Los Angeles Rams.

Dan Marino was the 27th overall draft pick in 1983. He was drafted by the Miami Dolphins where he played all sixteen seasons of his career. At Miami, he had 3,000-yard seasons thirteen times. He was the first quarterback to reach 5,000 yards in one season. Marino was named All-AFC 6 times. He played in one Super Bowl, but they did not win.

Rodger Staubach won the Heisman Trophy in 1963 as a junior at Navy. After graduation, he spent 4 years in the Navy serving part of the time in Vietnam. After serving his country, he joined Dallas at 27. He helped win 2 Super Bowls where he was MVP in one. He played for Dallas all 10 seasons he was in the NFL.

Football 101 part 2 will be about the other 5 quarterbacks on the quiz.
