Sweet and Spicy Ham Dip Recipe

Sweet and Spicy Ham Dip Recipe
Have you seen the Robert Rothschild Farm Roasted Pineapple & Habanero Sauce in the spring at your local Costco and wondered what it could be used for? This wonderful product is deeply discounted, and I buy two bottles a year. It's perfect for those times when I need a sweet-hot flavor.

Roasted Pineapple & Habanero sauce is the ideal blend of sweetness and a little kick of heat. Adding roasted red peppers to this sauce and glaze brings out the rich flavor of the pineapple. It is a luxury food that I use to accent the flavors in other foods. Sugar is the first ingredient, but it has no high fructose corn syrup. Two tablespoons of this sauce has 70 calories and 18 grams of carbohydrate.

What if you missed your chance and didn't get the sauce at Costco? You can order it from online sellers, like Amazon, but it is dreadfully expensive. Here is a substitute that you can make at home. Use 2 heaping tablespoons of crushed pineapple, ½ to 1 tablespoon minced pickled jalapenos, ½ teaspoon apple cider, 2 firmly packed tablespoons of brown sugar, a good sprinkle of onion salt, and ½ teaspoon of cornstarch. Stir it all together in a small microwave safe dish. I used a small cup. Microwave for 1 minute. Stop it and stir, then microwave for 30 seconds more. Give the sauce a squeeze of about half a teaspoon of fresh lemon juice and stir in a tablespoon of agave. Substitute all of this for the ¼ cup Rothschild Roasted Pineapple & Habanero Sauce. It is a decent substitute, if you don't have the real thing.

Sweet and Spicy Ham Dip Recipe

Ingredients:

1 package cream cheese
¼ cup Rothschild Roasted Pineapple & Habanero Sauce (or use the substitute in this article)
3 tablespoons minced mini peppers
2 tablespoons minced sweet onion
½ teaspoon balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons minced pickled jalapeno peppers
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
3 tablespoons cooked bacon crumbles (Use real bacon crumbles. I got mine at ALDI.)
3 ounces shaved deli ham – chopped up as fine as you want it (I used Hormel Cure 81.)
2 tablespoons brine from the pickled jalapenos (optional)
Berbere seasoning – to taste (I use Penzeys Berbere.)
Tony Chachere's Creole Seasoning – to taste (This is available at many stores.)

Method:

In a medium mixing bowl, cut the cream cheese into 4 pieces. Microwave the cream cheese for 15 seconds, check to see if the cream cheese is soft enough to work with a spoon. If not, then microwave for another 10 seconds. Stir in the pineapple habanero sauce or the substitute sauce described in this article.

In a covered microwave dish, heat the minced mini peppers for 1 minute. Let the mini peppers stand, covered, for 5-10 minutes. In a covered microwave dish, add the minced onions and balsamic vinegar, then stir them together. Heat the onions for 30 seconds in the microwave. Let the onions stand for 5 minutes. Stir the mini peppers, jalapenos, and onion with balsamic into the cream cheese mixture. Add the lime juice, bacon crumbles, and shaved ham, with the jalapeno brine, if desired, and stir them together. Sprinkle with Berbere and the Creole Seasoning, to taste. These are hot seasonings, use them sparingly.

This dip can be served with pita or potato chips. It is completely yummy with the new pinto bean chips. What a new twist on ham and beans! It's also great with veggie dippers or sliced apples. This dip will also make wonderful Romaine lettuce wraps.

Create sandwiches with Sweet and Spicy Ham Dip. You can make this into pinwheels, too! Serve an open-face sandwich with Sweet and Spicy Ham Dip on toasted sourdough bread, garnished with shredded lettuce. Serve these pinwheels or open-face sandwiches with creamy coleslaw or broccoli salad.

Some like it hot! For those who love the sweet and hot, check out the Related Links below. They call for a different type of habanero sauce, but the pineapple type can be substituted 1 to 1 to make these recipes.
