Kay's Pizza Burgers Recipe

Kay's Pizza Burgers Recipe
Every family seems to have a go-to dinner dish that everyone in the family loves. My friend, Kristy Edeen, who lives in Sheridan, Wyoming, makes the family’s favorite Kay’s Pizza Burgers, several times a month. The recipe is her mother’s (Kay), and she grew up loving it. Now her grown children make this quick and easy dish – it only has 5 ingredients, and it is still a family favorite. If you’re in a big hurry, you can save time by using a package from the Ground Beef Module.

Kristy stresses the importance of using the pizza sauce that contains no sugar – it tastes best, and she always uses Ragu brand Homemade Style. One of her daughters adds pepperoni, and even though I like it just the way it is, individual favorite pizza toppings of your choice can be added. If you use extra fresh French bread, put the cut loaves in the oven for a few minutes to avoid sogginess.

4 Servings

1 loaf French bread

1 1/4 pounds ground beef
1/2 onion, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon garlic salt

1 14 oz. jar pizza sauce, without sugar (Kristy uses Ragu Homemade Style)

3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 large tomato, sliced

  1. Preheat oven to 375°.
  2. Cut the bread in half lengthwise, then cut crosswise on an angle, creating four pieces.
  3. Remove most of the bread from the middle (leave about an inch); set the bread pieces on a baking sheet.
  4. Brown the ground beef and onions in a skillet, stirring to break up the pieces.
  5. Season with the salt, pepper, and garlic.
  6. Stir in the pizza sauce and bring to a boil, stirring.
  7. Divide the mixture between the four pieces of bread and spread to cover each piece.
  8. Sprinkle 3/4 cup shredded mozzarella over the ground beef mixture.
  9. Top with cheese with tomato slices.
  10. Bake 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly.
