The Five of Wands

The Five of Wands
Diversity of thought, belief, race, gender, and culture makes our world an interesting place in which to live. What we believe is generally based upon our upbringing and what we are taught based upon our cultural values. Beliefs, however, are not always factually sound. So, conflict can arise when people of completely opposing beliefs are gathered together.

This is the quandary facing the Bard from the Land of Wands. The trip across the sea was absolutely amazing. He woke each morning to the sound of waves against the bow of the ship, and fell asleep each night embraced by the ships gently rocking motion.

He was feeling in high spirits as he disembarked and stood upon the ground that would be his new home... at least for a few years. He and his old friend embraced and laughed as the Bard wobbled on his still sea bound legs.

After a much appreciated homemade meal and a long sleep, the Bard was ready to explore his new village. He had chosen this place to live because he had heard so much about what an amazing melting pot of humanity it had become. He could hardly wait to share his songs and stories.

He followed the voices to a small park by the sea. He gazed in amazement at the diversity of clothing and coloring of the people in front of him. There were men and women of every shape and size. Some where speaking one on one while others stood in groups posturing and debating.

As he approached he was beckoned into a group of men dressed in black and white with long beards. They spoke in a strange dialect, but he could still understand the gist of what they were saying. When the Bard was asked to share his thoughts he did so with wild abandon. When he was finished there was a brief silence before his beliefs were verbally shredded into pieces by his new comrades.

At first he was confused and hurt by their attack, but as he watched and listened he began to understand that there was no judgement here. There was only hearty and healthy debate. He soon began to get into the rhythm of the debate and began to feel as if he was in a group of old and dear friends.

If the Five of Wands appears in your cards, perhaps it is time to stop and really listen to those whose beliefs may be different from yours. You may find that you have a lot more in common than you think that you do. Friendly debate can be an enlightening and exhilarating experience. Judgement, egotism, hatred and contempt only breed the same.

Listen and learn, even though you may not always agree.
