No Stone Unturned Review
It’s Thanksgiving weekend, 1960, and 24-year-old Ellie Stone has her camera ready as she checks for clues as to who murdered a popular society girl, Jordon Shaw. Ellie was a reporter for the local daily newspaper, and after three years of mundane news reporting she was hoping for a big break.

Her publisher didn’t approve of girl reporters and Ellie was beginning to wonder if he had a point – maybe females weren’t cut out for hard news.

When the body of the daughter of a prominent local businessman, and niece of a well-known judge, was discovered in the woods, Ellie was determined to write the best report she could. It also helped that Sheriff Olney asked her to take pictures as his photographer was on another assignment. That gave her the chance to collect as many clues as possible and also learn what evidence the police found.

Ellie felt a strong tie to the murdered girl and wanted to do everything she could to help find the killer. She also believed some of the professionals weren’t doing as much as they could to solve the crime.

Clues led her to a seedy motel outside of town, and the realization that Jordon Shaw wasn’t as pristine as everyone thought. In fact, she was wilder than anyone expected, but managed to keep her darker side hidden from friends and family.

The deeper Ellie dug into the life of the young woman, the more shocked she was by what she learned. When Jordan’s roommate was also murdered, Ellie knew she was getting closer to finding the killer. Unfortunately, the killer was now trying to stop Ellie from revealing the truth, no matter what it took.

No Stone Unturned, An Ellie Stone Mystery, was written by James W. Ziskin, following Styx & Stone, the first in this interesting series based in the 1960’s.

The author draws a believable picture of the underbelly of a small town that has more secrets than most inhabits would believe. Unfortunately, our heroine must immerse herself in the muck and mire world of a sick and twisted antagonist in order to prevent further murders.

How she goes about that challenge provides an intriguing look at a flawed young woman who is bent on making it in the mostly male world of journalism in the early sixties.

The well-developed characters and often seedy backdrop lends an eerie atmosphere to much of the novel. The author brings strong emotions to the surface as we watch Ellie go deeper into the psyche of the murderer. We feel her strong desire and desperation to solve this crime and understand why she places her own self in harm’s way.

These feelings are a result of an author who can bring strong emotions and tension into a well-written story. We are looking forward to the next Ellie Stone installment.
