Death by Autopsy Review

Death by Autopsy Review
Pathologist Toni Day was just starting an autopsy on Beulah Mae Pritchard, whose car went over a snow-covered bridge and into a canal, when she suddenly realized her “corpse” was still alive. Beulah’s quick recovery scared everyone in the room, most of all Toni.

Most people disliked Beulah, who was a nurse at the hospital. Although she was a heartless gossip and chronic liar, Toni didn’t want her to die on Toni’s autopsy table.

Later it was revealed that her husband had already died prior to Beulah’s running off the road. Not too long afterwards Beulah also died (again?). Much discussion took place among the medical staff and Toni’s family regarding someone’s body’s temperature. Beulah was clinically dead, but her temperature kept her from becoming brain dead.

Beulah’s estranged twin sister, Brenda Duke, appeared out of thin air and demanded she get a large amount of money that Beulah stole. She threatened to sue Toni, the department, and the hospital because of the autopsy performed while Beulah was still alive.

In order to clear her name and stop a vicious murderer, Toni went on the offensive and conducted her own investigation in an attempt to find the killer.

Death by Autopsy is the fourth Toni Day Mystery written by Jane Bennett Munro, MD. The award-winning author writes what she knows, having spent thirty-seven years as a hospital-based pathologist.

The novel was fast-paced and fun to read. The main and secondary characters, specifically Toni’s husband, mother, in-laws, and close co-workers fit right in and were a strong part of the story.

The one possible negative was how technical Death by Autopsy was throughout the book. The story will educate, or annoy, depending on the point of view of the reader. Personally, after working in an anesthesia department for a number of years, I enjoyed the detail and could understand Toni’s frustration.

It’s easy to get engrossed in this book and lose track of time. If you are looking for an engaging medical mystery, this is the one to read.
