Good Taste: Simple, Delicious Recipes for Family and Friends is a delightful cookbook that is as fun to read as it is to cook from. Jane Green, veteran bestselling novelist, not only tempts us with easy and fun recipes, but also with great vignettes as well as entertaining hints. There are beautiful pictures, and there isn’t really a dish that I don’t want to try. Most of the recipes have decidedly English undertones, and there is nothing in the book that is boring. Green’s recipe for Kedgeree is amazing, and she includes several curries that are quick and easy. Moroccan Chicken is in the queue, as well as her Braised Short ribs with Marmalade Glaze. There are so many mouthwatering recipes to try, that everyone will be able to find several dishes to cook.

Most of the recipes are easy to understand, but I admit I was stumped when I made the Warm Chocolate and Banana Cake. The first ingredient is “plain chocolate,” and I wasn’t sure what that was. After a little research, I learned that dark chocolate is sometimes called plain chocolate, so I used it; also it called for one cup (chocolate is generally measured by weight), which I took to mean chopped, but until the cake was finished and turned out marvelously delicious, I wasn’t sure. Incidentally, the recipe didn’t list a pan size, and mine had to cook longer than specified in the recipe.

It just happened that friends came over just as I took the Potato, Gorgonzola and Sage bread out of the oven. It lasted all of about 15 minutes, and it now has a permanent place in my recipe collection. Yum!

The only drawback to this cookbook is that pan sizes aren’t listed, and while the instructions are understandable, they are not quite as detailed as they should be; apparently Green assumes that all of her readers are experienced cooks and don’t need instructions.

Nevertheless, I love this book! It’s filled with down-to-earth recipes that regular people will want to make. The recipes are simple, yet unique, and are not your regular Betty Crocker everyday boring same-olds.

Green is also a good writer, and her cute personality comes through in the introductions and explanations of the recipes. This is one cookbook that is highly recommended.
