Prevent allergies

Prevent allergies
Allergy season promises to hit with full force in many U.S. locations this year. Taking certain vitamins and supplements may prevent allergy symptoms, according to Dr. Robert Ivker, author of Sinus Survival: The Holistic Medical Treatment for Allergies, Colds and Sinusitis.

Here’s what adults should be taking:

Vitamin C crystals: 1000-2,000 mg. 3x/day

Ivker states in his book that Vitamin C has been “extremely effective in the treatment and prevention of colds, allergies and sinus infections” because of its antioxidant properties.

Beta Carotene: 25,000 IU 1 or 2 x/d

Vitamin A helps to maintain the integrity of mucous membranes.

Vitamin E: 400 IU 1 or 2 x/d

Recognized as a powerful antioxidant.

Grapeseed extract: 100 mg 1 or 2 x/d on an empty stomach

Another antioxidant. Purchase pure grapeseed extract and add 10 drops to a glass water. Stir and drink.

Vitamin B6: 50 mg 2 x/d

Multivitamin: 1 to 3 X/d
Make sure your choice has all the B vitamins and is yeast-free.

Selenium: 100-200 mcg/d

Selenium is a mineral that breaks down leukotrienes, an allergy-related compound.

Magnesium: 500 mg./d

A mineral that during allergic reaction supports lung function by relaxing the smooth bronchial muscles.

Calcium: 1000 mg./d; menopause 1,500 mg./d

Ivker recommends giving up dairy because of its mucus-producing properties.

Garlic: 1,200 mg./d

An antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal.

Flaxseed oil: 2 T./d

May help postnasal drip.

Other natural remedies

Other natural remedies are peppermint oil and/or eucalyptus oil. Put a small amount (one drop) of peppermint or eucalyptus oil on your fingertip and then wipe it around the outside of both nostrils. The peppermint oil acts as a stimulant and decongestant to improve circulation to the nasal membranes. Eucalyptus oil has a similar effect and can be inhaled with or without steam.

I have found all of these remedies beneficial especially when combined with nasal irrigation used daily. Other things that can be helpful include getting good sleep, 7-9 hours/night; saline nasal spray, used daily; drinking water (1-2 ounces/pound of body weight); and regular exercise, preferably aerobic.
