Veteran cookbook authors, Marnie Hanel and Jen Stevensen have again combined forces (they are the authors of The Picnic) to release The Campout Cookbook: Inspired Recipes for Cooking Around the Fire and Under the Stars. For campers, this excellent cookbook has not only great ideas for recipes, but also ideas for building a fire, packing, setting up a campsite, storing food, avoiding problems (like bears, weather problems, and mosquitoes), choosing the right campsite, Camping with your canine, etc.

There are dozens of good recipes that won’t be found in other camping books: Smokey Smashed Potatoes (fabulous!), Roasted Garlic Parmesan Monkey Bread, Spicy Chuckwagon Chili, Red Cabbage, Jicama, and Orange Slaw, Pedal-to-the-Metal Migas, Blackberry Cardamom Coffee Cake, Figgy Pecan Crackers and Whipped Feta, and Forest Fondue to name a few.

The recipes are easy to follow and give instructions for prep at home, and then instructions once at the campsite. There is a primer on foil dinners with lots of ideas, and several of the recipes are made in the Dutch Oven. Some of the recipes are quick and easy; others are a bit more involved, like the Brown Butter Toffee Blondies, which are incredible and worth every minute spent in the kitchen.

The one drawback to this cookbook is that there are no actual photographs of the recipes. There are cute illustrations, but that doesn’t make up for knowing how the recipes are supposed to look. However, the book is good enough that it is definitely recommended for campers everywhere who want to eat well on their camping trips.
