Subway Goes to High Carb Wrap

Subway Goes to High Carb Wrap
I love Subway. Don't get me wrong. They have very fresh food, and you have great, healthy options. With all the bread on the menu, though, surely there was no need to remove the one low-sugar option they had available?

True, Subway used to be affiliated with Atkins back when Dr. Atkins was still alive. They had large "low carb" menu listings, they had carb charts on their front glass, they even had sugar-free cookies which I *loved*. This was really a mecca for people who were trying to avoid sugar. You get a low carb wrap, fill it with turkey and lettuce and fresh veggies, and you were all set.

Now, suddenly, without any warning, they CHANGED their low carb wrap into a high carb wrap. It's still slightly better than the other bread options, as you can see below:

wrap: 33g
white bread: 38g
monterey cheddar bread: 39g
wheat bread: 40g

Still, the old wrap was FAR better! It tasted good, too. It was all healthy ingredients. Why would they go with a healthy, low-sugar, low-carb warp to a wrap that tastes exactly the same but has apparently 10 times the sugar in it? Does that make sense to anybody?

Since I don't think anybody was saying "Please change so we can get more sugar in our wraps!" My only guess is that this is all about the money. Undoubtedly the healthier wrap cost more - and they figured they could save some cash by foisting the high carb wrap on people without telling them at all. So they pulled down all the carb charges, quietly updated their website with the new number, and the change was done.

Of course, the downside is the health of people who visit Subway. Now people who go into Subway who are diabetic and watching their sugar / starch intake are getting blasted with extra carbs, without any warning. Who thinks to re-investigate a restaurant once you think you know what the ingredient list is? If you do research on McDonalds and find out a Big Mac has 80,000 calories, you don't call them up every month after that to see if it STILL has 80,000 calories. You figure that's the way they make it. Not with Subway, apparently. They change things when they want to bring in extra cash, and people who are trying to live healthy lives and counting the sugar they take in just have to figure things out for themselves.

I'm writing to Subway to find out what their official story is for why they made the change without warning anybody. I'll let you know what they say ...

UPDATE MAR 2009: Subway has now completely abandoned ALL wraps. Low carbers and diabetics now have NO option when they go to Subway for a healthy bread.
