Gas and Vegetables

Gas and Vegetables
For people used to avoiding veggies - or thinking of a potato as a veggie - it may come as a surprise that many veggies will give you gas! We're talking about gas in the burp-and-fart style, not gas like the stuff that powers your car engine :)

Veggies causing gas is QUITE normal. It's amazing that so many people do not eat veggies in modern times that they would not realize this goes on.

In essence, there is a type of plant sugar, called raffinose, that is eaten by bacteria in your intestines. That bacteria then gives off gas, which you fart out.

The veggies that tend to do this are:

Asparagus
Brussells sprouts
Broccoli
Cabbage
Cauliflower
Eggplant
Radish

These veggies are quite healthy for you, and have both wonderful nutrients and a good amount of fiber. It's almost a shame that our culture finds a normal part of digetsion (passing gas) to be unacceptable in social situations. There really is little you can do to stop those bacteria from creating gas as they digest your food properly.

Other than that, maybe we should all band together and help convince the world that passing gas is a normal part of eating a healthy diet!
