In the Bad News Bear, Billy Bob Thornton plays Morris Buttermaker, a washed up baseball player whose career in the major leagues lasted less than an inning. Now, as an exterminator, Buttermaker is hired as a baseball coach for a bunch of 12-year olds who are as obnoxious and hopeless as Buttermaker. The only reason that they are even in the league is due to a lawsuit. But for Buttermaker, it is a job with a paycheck, so he agrees to take on the job.

The team gets beat so bad in the first innings of their first game that they end up forfeiting. Inspired by the arrogance of the championship team's coach played by Greg Kinnear, Buttermaker actually decides to start acting as a coach and doing the job he gets paid for. Though the team improves a bit, Buttermaker decides to persuade the daughter he hasn't seen in 3 years to join as a pitcher. He also uses her to entice a juvenile delinquent full of attitude to join the team. With the addition of the two, the team starts to win. They do it so well that they find themselves facing the championship team.
