The Great Seed Experiment: Results by Bird
The purpose of the Great Seed Experiment was to determine which birds enjoyed which seeds. I have my notes from All of Day 1 and from Subsequent Days on line.
Here is the current summary of the results, broken out by bird type.
Cowbird
The cowbirds enjoyed the cracked corn.
Rose-Breasted Grosbeak
My very first visitor! The grosbeaks liked the shelled seed and BOSS.
Chipping Sparrow
The chipping sparrows hung out in the grass mostly. They did come up for shelled seed.
Grackle
The grackles were extremely shy and had to work up the nerve to come up for BOSS and shelled seed. They were happier down eating bread.
House Finch
Definitely enjoyed the thistle. Sat there and ate a lot.
Morning Dove
Surprisingly, the dove enjoyed the thistle. It also enjoyed the cracked corn.
Titmouse
I had several families of titmice hanging out nearby, so titmouse were definitely the prime visitors. They enjoyed the shelled seed, mixed seed, and BOSS. Shelled seemed to be their favorite. They wouldn't stay there, they'd grab one and fly off with it, then come back.
Other Visitors
Squirrel
The squirrels walked right past all other seed to get to the BOSS.
Chipmunk
The chipmunk was one of the only consumers of the cracked corn.
