Tribal Dance Groups
There are so many Tribal dance groups and much is going on in this wonderful dance community. Just visiting these different sites, I was in awe. The more and more I look at Tribal, I just want to throw all my worries to the wind. Take a look at the different sites and you will see that Tribal is a sisterhood of dance.
1. Hipnosis Tribal Belly Dance - This group is located in Philadelphia, PA. They are dedicated to the sisterhood of Tribal dance. The co-founders are Maeve Doyle, Jessica Staley, and Vikki Williams. Earthy movements are what attracted many of the members to Tribal dance, so they were able to form this troupe in 2003. Check them out as they perform for the PA Renaissance Faire at Father Dunn's Stand on October 6, 2007. Their Fall schedule is up, and to find out more, visit them at tribalbellies.com.
2. Indingo Belly Dance Company - Mardi Love, Rachel Brice, Sharon Kihara and Zoe are members of this group. Rachel Brice is the founder and they have been around since 2003. This year, Rachel Brice and the company put on their first full-length touring show, Le Serpent Rouge. To be on their mailing list, go to theindingo.net. 3. Awalim Dance Company - Awalim means world, knowledge, skill, art, and science. Located in Pine Lake, GA., this group was formed back in 1999, under the direction of Ziah Ali McKinney-Taylor. Their focus is on taking Tribal to a more sophisticated and upbeat level. They just finished an exciting workshop with Rania Bossonis at the Sheraton in Atlanta, GA. on September 8, 2007. 4. Desert Rain Tribal Dance - This group combines ATS and other ethnic influenced dance styles. Their dancers also take improvisational choreography to the next level. Formed in the Fall of 2000, Desert Rain Tribal Dance performs regularly in Northern Colorado at different shows and events. They also conduct workshops. Julia Di Verdi is the director. 5. Heavy Hips Tribal Belly Dance - Once you enter their website, the three words that describe Tribal just stand out: Empowerment, Strength, and Community. Those tops! How colorful and rich in detail! I have to have one. Take a look at their Solstice Candle 2004 performance. They are located in Santa Cruz, CA. and you can check out their website at heavyhips.net.
6. Gypsy Hands Tribal Belly Dance Troupe - This troupe has been around since 2001. Current members include Kimberly Chandler, Katherine Metz, Jackie Cole Contreras and Lindsay Rogers. Those who know Gypsy Hands Tribal Dance are familiar with their fire eating and sword play performances. They are also known for their Gypsy Hands Healing Arts Center in Knoxville, Tenn. 7. Florida Tribal Dance - Their focus is on ATS and Tribal Fusion. The class schedule is up, and there are classes going on in Orlando, Florida. Director Lacey started at the age of fifteen, performing at the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). Recently, Lacey was asked to teach Tribal in Korea!
8. Desert Veils Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Troupe - This troupe was founded by Jamilla in 1999, and this troupe was the first of its kind, located in a desert region in Utah. The desert is where Jamilla choreographs her dances. Nature and Jamilla become one until her choreography is complete. desertveils.org is where you can find out more about this group.

Tribal Tique - Julia Di Verdi (from Desert Rain Tribal Dance) and Molly McClellan are on their journey with their own interpretation of ATS called American Tribal Trique Style "ATTS", combining ATS with their own cutting edge fusion. Classes are going on right now and you can contact Julia or Molly at tribaltique.com.
10. Hahbi 'Ru - Many Tribal dance troupes refer to this group. This is a sixteen member troupe that is basically Old World-Folkloric Style. They are out of California and they have been together since 1991. Students of Jamila Salimpour, John Compton and Rita Alderucci are the co-directors of this group. They have also performed with Salimpour's Bal Anat Troupe. Check out their costumes when you visit their website at hahbiru.com.
