Something Good Review

Something Good Review
Want to hear about Something Good? Well now is your chance. As a Nova Scotia-based hip hop band, this group combines a blend of 90’s era hip hop inspirations with disco, dance and rock in order to let the good times roll. With genre-bending excitement, Something Good are definitely making their mark on Eastern Canada and can only go up from here.

Based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Something Good are an 8-piece live hip hop band who believes in living up to their name, both on and off the stage. The many band members include Boy-ill (MC), Markit (MC), DJ Y-Rush (turntables), Alex Meade (guitar/keyboard/recording/production), Alan Hoskins (bass), Jordan Oakie (drums), Jarrett Sampson (aux. percussion) and Nicole Curry (vocals). All of these young talents stay busy with their ongoing “Good Deeds” projects which enable them to give back to their community when they’re not busy packing dance floors.

Nominated for an ECMA and the winners of Music Nova Scotia’s 2011 Hip Hop Recording of the Year award, these self-proclaimed party rockers are sure to stick around for awhile and I foresee big things for them in the future. I was lucky enough to attend their latest live show in Fredericton, New Brunswick and I definitely was not disappointed by their performance. Stephen Cooke of the Chronicle Herald has called Something Good “one of the most body-moving live-dance parties in town” and I couldn’t have said it better myself. With a mixture of classic hip hop, beautiful vocals and great music, this band has created the perfect blend of danceable tunes with relatable lyrics; yet they have a smoothness that is easy enough to listen to whether you’re at a dance club or not. In my opinion, when a band is able to develop a unique sound that fans can enjoy in both party situations and also while driving in the car, it is then that you know that they are doing “something good.”

Since establishing themselves as a group over four years ago, Something Good has recorded and released three EPs and one single track. Their debut EP was released on August 20, 2009 and is titled Just Add Water. They also have a remixed version of that EP that is called Just Add Water (and Stir), which released on December 4, 2010. Before recording their latest album, Something Good released a single track titled Quick Hands to the public on September 3, 2011. Then, after much hard work and dedication, they released their most recent EP called Business As Usual on March 5, 2011. With their EPs and recordings being created and released as often as they are, I can only imagine that Something Good has another album up their sleeves and will have some new debuts for us soon.
